OTHER SILL / SOLE PLATES:
The sill plate is the framing member which sits
directly on the foundation, slab or footing.
Other names may be base-plate, mudsill,
sole-plate, sill plate, etc. In newer
construction this plate is bolted to the
foundation. Many older buildings have sill
plates which are not bolted to the foundation.
Since this was an acceptable building technique
at the time, the inspector seldom will mention
whether or not the plate is bolted down. When
this item is marked there may be a problem since
normally redwood, cedar, or treated sill plates
are used in construction to resist wood rot,
etc. It may be necessary to have the plate
treated in place by a Pest Control Company.
Refer to the Inspector's Comments section of the
Survey Findings Page for additional information.
