TREATED SILL / SOLE PLATE
TREATED SILL / SOLE PLATE:
The sill plate is the framing member which sits
directly on the foundation, slab, or footing.
Other names may be base-plate, mudsill,
sole-plate, etc. In newer construction this
plate is bolted to the foundation. Many older
buildings have sill plates which are not bolted
to the foundation. Since this was an acceptable
building technique at the time, the inspector
will not necessarily mention whether or not the
sill plate are bolted down. Pressure-treated
sill-plate means that the sill plate has been
chemically treated to resist wood boring
insects, biological decay, fungi, etc. The
chemical is forced into the wood under high
pressure to ensure complete saturation, making
this type of lumber suitable for direct burial,
contact with concrete, and many other uses where
ordinary wood would be rapidly rotted.
