SPACED / BUTTED ROOF
SHEATHING:
Sheathing is the material used to support the
actual roofing materials. Roof sheathing is
fastened directly to the rafters. This
particular system is often found under wood
shingles in today's framing but in older
buildings may be found under any roofing
material. When used under wood shingles the
nominal 1" sheathing boards may be spaced
apart a few inches while under other types of
roof materials the 1" sheathing boards may
be butted together. Both ways are normal framing
techniques. Generally 1" x 6"
sheathing should not span more than 24 inches,
but in older construction one may find this
sheathing spanned up to 36 inches. Spaced
sheathing, as opposed to solid plywood or OSB
sheathing, under concrete tiles is common in
some areas. This system does not use felt paper
for extra protection against water penetration
in the event of broken tiles or wind driven
rains. Use extreme caution when walking on tile
roofs of all kinds, especially this application.
Broken tiles will almost certainly result in
roof leaks.
