BASEBOARD ROTTED
BASEBOARD
ROTTED / DAMAGED / LOOSE / STAINED / MISSING:
This item refers to all types of baseboards,
whether they be plastic, wood, ceramic tile, or
other materials. Anywhere there is moisture
consistently on wood there is the possibility of
fungus growth or dry rot. The condition should
be remedied as soon as possible since the rot
can spread to framing members. Damaged
baseboards are often cosmetic in nature unless
wood rot is present. Loose baseboards make
excellent breeding grounds for insects and may
hold moisture behind them. The loose baseboard
should be secured as soon as possible and
sealed. Stained baseboards usually indicate
water leaks in the vicinity, possible from the
shower or tub. Further investigation may be
called for. Remove the affected portions of the
baseboard and install new ones. Sometimes a
perfect match of the old baseboard will not be
possible. Replacing all the baseboard within the
room may be in order. Contact a General
Contractor to help correct this condition, or
consider having a Flooring Company install new
vinyl flooring and cove the material up the
wall. Loose wood baseboards should be renailed
and caulked along the top and bottom. Loose
vinyl or tile baseboards can be adhered with
adhesive caulk or contact cement.
