MASTIC
TILE SURROUND: Mastic tile means the tile
has been applied to the wall material directly,
using an adhesive designed for this purpose.
Usually, the wallboard is a special water
resistant type often called "green
board." See 62a to compare this system with
floated tile and for information on grout
repairs. When tile is adhered directly to walls
or counter surfaces it has to move with the
normal expansion/contraction of these surfaces.
Since the expansion/contraction "buffer
zone" provided by the concrete bed used
with floated tile is not present, grout and tile
are at greater risk of failure. Mastic
tile adhered to wall surface. Note the bullnose
edge pieces. Typically the drywall behind tub
and shower surrounds is a water resistant type.
The joints in the drywall should be sealed
before applying the tile, but seldom is. Keep a
good coat of tile sealer on all grout and tile.
