FLOATED
TILE SURROUND (in appearance only): Floated
tile is the best system for installing tile. A
waterproof barrier is fastened to the wall or
counter and a metal lath is nailed in place over
this barrier. A cement, lime and sand mixture is
troweled over the lath to a depth of 5/8"
to 1-1/4" and leveled out. Leveling of the
concrete bed is important since that is what
makes the tile job so flat and level. The tile
is then "set" onto this concrete bed.
Tile which is "stuck" on walls and
counters with mastic (and is not backed with the
concrete bed) will follow the irregularities of
the surface and may be wavy or uneven. Some
Ceramic Tile Contractors occasionally use
"Wonder Board," a prefabricated
1/2" nominal thickness concrete
"bed" which is either glued and/or
nailed to the surface in preparation for tile.
This is a very durable material which gives the
look and durability of floated tile. Some tile
setters will simply apply two layers of
"green board" (a water resistant
drywall type material) to give the appearance of
floated tile. This application would be
equivalent to "mastic tile." Be
aware that the inspector would not know with any
degree of certainty which "float"
system was used. There are several brands of
grout--each having its own colors. Obtain a
color chart for each brand at various Ceramic
Tile Dealers so you can It is extremely
important that all grout and tile cracks in this
type of tile installation be kept repaired.
Water which may seep through cracks will cause
rapid deterioration of the installation. Liberal
applications of silicone tile sealers are
recommended. Tile which was installed with
mastic should be treated more gently than you
might treat floated tile. Hammering on walls or
standing on counter tops which have mastic tile
applied to them should be avoided. All materials
needed to maintain tile properly, and helpful
information for their use, are available at most
Ceramic Tile Outlets. This method of application
is highly prone to moisture migration into the
walls. The inspector cannot ascertain if water
migration through the walls is occurring and/or
is causing or contributing to indoor air quality
concerns. This may include, but is not limited
to, fungi, mold, volatile organic compounds,
etc. For further information you are advised to
contact the inspector or have testing performed
by other qualified persons.
