TANK
LOOSE ON BOWL / LEAKS AT BOWL CONNECTION:
Our concern here is that the loose tank bolts
may eventually crack the underside of the china
tank or begin leaking. If it is already leaking,
water damage to the floor or other damage, may
be possible. The tank should be secured to the
bowl as soon as possible. Two or three bolts
fasten the tank to the bowl. Between the tank
and bowl is a "doughnut" shaped
gasket. Tightening these bolts will usually
suffice. If the tank is tight but leaks, it will
be necessary to install a new gasket. This is
accomplished by draining the tank and removing
the bolts. Lift the tank slightly and remove the
old gasket. Slide in the new gasket and tighten
the bolts. The bolts themselves have rubber
gaskets under their heads inside the tank. These
can deteriorate and leak as well. Be sure to
review their condition while working on the tank
gasket. When working with vitreous china, such
as water closet fixtures, be extra cautious that
you do not overtighten the bolts. Should you
