SHOWER
HEAD DAMAGED / MISSING / SPRAYS BACKWARD: This
item is checked if the inspector feels that
water may somehow enter the wall cavity behind
the shower. . Damaged or loose shower heads
often spray water in all directions wetting
surfaces which are not intended to be wet.
Shower heads which spray water backward will
almost certainly cause water to enter the wall
cavity around the pipe escutcheon. This is an
easy item to repair. Usually the head can be
removed and reinstalled with teflon tape wrapped
on the threads of the spout pipe. Sometimes the
head will be damaged beyond repair and require
replace- ment. Should you need assistance with
this repair contact either a Handyman Service or
a Plumbing Contractor. water to enter the wall
cavity. Some types of diverters are simple
valves on the tub spouts while some are built
into the wall with the hot and cold water
valves. Spout type diverters can be replaced
easily by removing the defective spout and
installing a new one. Diverter valves in the
wall can be more difficult to repair but usually
new washers or stem packings are all that are
needed. These are replaced by removing the stem
bushing nut just below the handle. The stem will
then come out, exposing the packing and other
washers. Parts are available at most any
Building Supply Outlet. A Plumbing Contractor
should be consulted to ascertain the merits of
repairing or replacing a wall mounted diverter
valve.
