O4a. MASONRY FENCES (block, brick, stone, cast concrete, etc.):
These fences are considered virtually indestructible and permanent...if they are built on solid footings, are reinforced, if there is no ground movement or erosion near them, if they are not being used for retaining walls, and if no major earthquakes occur that would shift the fence Be aware that the inspector cannot check footings or reinforcing of the fence. The Visual Inspection includes looking at the fence and pushing on the fence. No other tests are performed. Contact the inspector for further information if desired Maintaining this type fence, for the most part, involves keeping the ground moisture moderate around them. Don't allow pooling of water around the posts or along the footings. Keep runoff water from eroding the soil from around posts and footings also Should this type of fence start to lean or become excessively "shaky" (almost all block fences shake somewhat when pushed on) or loose, repairs should be effected immediately. Removal and replacement of the fence or installation of bracing posts on each side of the fence at properly spaced intervals may be called for Walk your fence line every three months, or so, and after any heavy rains, and correct any problems as soon as possible. Be especially on the lookout for loose cap bricks which may fall onto someone.
