ANTI-SIPHON VALVE NOT ABOVE HIGHEST HEAD / NOT LOCATED
/ LEAKS / AMISS: An anti-siphon valve is a special valve containing
a one-way rubber seal which is used to prevent contaminated water from
siphoning back into the potable water system. Leaky anti-siphon
irrigation valves are usually easy to repair by replacing stem packings
or seals or by removing the leaking fitting and replacing or resealing
the threads. Often the valve will be so inexpensive that replacement is
best. Parts are usually available at Garden Equipment Outlets and
Building Supply Stores. If possible take the offending valve to the
store to more easily match needed parts Anti-siphon valves, or devices,
should be installed. Usually the type which is installed at the main
sprinkler water supply connection is the easiest to retrofit. Be sure
that the anti-siphon valve is 6 to 12 inches above the highest sprinkler
head, depending on the requirements of your municipality. On hillsides
this may require piping the sprinkler water supply line to the top of
the hill (or highest point of the irrigated areas) since many sprinkler
heads would be below the anti-siphon valve. Installation of a single
main anti-siphon valve which would supply water to all station supply
valves, would provide back flow protection to any sprinklers below More
level properties may only require the anti-siphon valves to be raised on
pipe extensions Leaky anti-siphon valves should be repaired or replaced
as soon as possible The materials needed to install and/or repair these
valves are readily available at most Lumber Yard and Home Improvement
Stores If you need assistance call on the services of a Landscape
Contractor Be aware that an anti-siphon valve may be present but not
apparent to the inspector, if "not located ' has been indicated.
