WATERFALLS / FOUNTAIN / POND

WATERFALLS / FOUNTAIN / POND:
Our main concern with these particular landscape attractions is with their electrical systems. Waterfalls and fountains usually require electric pumps to recirculate the water. Ponds often have 120 volt electric lights installed. Many of these installations have no Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI) installed as protection against electric shock in the event of an electrical defect. Some homeowner installed systems are not even grounded Another concern is the stability of concrete fountains. These can be very heavy and if not sufficiently stabilized may be in danger of falling It is recommended that you check the stability regularly since water at the base of the fountain can weaken the earth The inspector will check the stability of fountains by applying pressure to two sides of the fountain consecutively. The inspector may not comment on whether the system is grounded or whether GFCI systems are installed. If no comments are made, and if you are concerned, please contact the inspection company for more information and opinions--otherwise use caution when using the devices. All permanent electrical connections require municipal permits. The Visual Inspection Service does not include the review of permits.
